Puglia is a paradise for beach lovers. Stretched along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, this enchanting region boasts some of Italy's best coastlines, offering everything from lively atmospheres to tranquil escapes.

Having two distinct coastlines provides a wonderful variety of beach days. For example, when high winds make the Adriatic inaccessible, the Ionian side remains calm and perfect for a quiet day. Both coasts feature long, shallow sandy shores that families love.

Below is our personal list of recommended beaches, perfectly suited for a scenic, relaxed day trip.

1. Torre Guaceto

This one is a true gem set in a nature reserve and protected marine area, located near Ostuni. It stretches for various kilometers and is breathtakingly beautiful. If you are lucky you might even spot a giant sea turtle. To protect and grow this endangered species is one of the many projects of the reserve. Punta Penna Grossa is a small beach club with sunbeds and parasols to rent, but they do run out quickly in high summer, so it is best to come prepared and bring some essentials, such as water, snacks and a parasol, just in case.

2. Torre Canne

Torre Canne, a lovely little seaside town on the Adriatic coast, is one of our favourite recommendations for guests who want an easy, classic seaside day. The beach is long, sandy, and very approachable, with shallow water that makes it especially appealing for families with small children. There is also a promenade atmosphere nearby, so the day can be wonderfully simple from start to finish. And there are also some excellent seafood restaurants to end a perfect day with a wonderful dinner while listening to the gentle waves crashing against the shore.

One of the reasons we often point families here is convenience. You can combine beach time with lunch, gelato, a coffee stop, or an early evening passeggiata without needing to overplan. That makes it ideal when you want the sea without turning the day into a major excursion.

The setting is not wild in the same way as Torre Guaceto, but that is part of its charm. Torre Canne offers a blend of comfort and local charm, and sometimes that is exactly what a holiday needs. It is easy, welcoming, and well suited to guests who want to feel at home rather than navigate a complicated beach setup.

Try Lido La Zanzara right inside Torre Canne if you are looking for a beach club.

3. Pilone and the Lido Morelli stretch

Just along the coast near Ostuni, the Pilone and Lido Morelli area offers a lovely mix of sandy beach, dune landscape, and a quieter, more local feel. This is the kind of coastline we often recommend to guests staying with us who want a beautiful sea day without driving too far.

The beaches here can feel pleasantly unpolished in the best possible way. You have open stretches of sand, views framed by dunes and greenery, and a mood that invites you to spread out, read, swim, and stay longer than planned. If you are travelling with children who simply want space to play, it is a very good option.

What we especially appreciate is the balance. It feels scenic and relaxed, but it is still practical enough for a half-day trip if that suits your plans better. On a breezy morning, it is also lovely just to walk here, even if you are not spending the whole day on the sand.

4. Porto Ghiacciolo

Porto Ghiacciolo is very different from the broader sandy beaches above, and that is exactly why we love including it in this guide. Tucked near Monopoli, this small bay sits beside the atmospheric Castello di Santo Stefano, giving the whole setting a special sense of place. It feels intimate, photogenic, and distinctly Apulian.

Because the cove is smaller, this is not the beach we suggest for those wanting lots of open space or an all-day setup with multiple bags, umbrellas, and toys. Instead, it is wonderful for a shorter, more scenic beach stop, especially if you are combining it with time in Monopoli.

Couples often love it, but families can enjoy it too if they go early and keep expectations simple. The water here is usually beautifully clear, and there is something memorable about swimming with that historic backdrop nearby.

We often suggest Porto Ghiacciolo for guests who want a beach day with character, followed by an aperitivo or seafood dinner in Monopoli's old town.

5. Capitolo

Capitolo, just south of Monopoli, is one of the easiest answers when guests want a lively beach area with choice. Here you will find both equipped beach clubs and freer stretches of sand, with clear water and a coastline that feels made for long, sunny afternoons.

Capitolo works well if your group has different styles of holiday. Some guests like the comfort of a lido with sunbeds and lunch close by, while others prefer to lay down a towel and keep the day flexible. In this area, it is easier to mix both.

For families, it is a helpful option because the sea is generally inviting and the surrounding area is straightforward to navigate. For friends travelling together, it can also bring a little more energy without losing that relaxed Southern Italian feel.

If you are visiting over Memorial Day weekend and want a beach that feels social, sunny, and easy to enjoy, Capitolo is often a very good fit. It is less about isolation and more about a carefree day by the water, followed by a slow return home.

The following suggestions are a bit further away from Trullo & Villa Fumarola, but all especially worth exploring.

6. Torre Lapillo

When guests ask us for that pale sand and clear, calm water they have seen in postcards of Puglia, Torre Lapillo is one of the names that comes up very quickly. On the Ionian coast, the water here can be stunningly transparent, and the shallow shoreline makes it especially appealing for families.

This is the kind of beach where children can paddle happily near the edge while adults enjoy a more peaceful swim. The colour of the sea often feels almost Caribbean in the right light, but the atmosphere remains unmistakably Southern Italian, with simple beach days, unhurried lunches, and that easy rhythm of summer beginning.

Because Torre Lapillo is well loved, it is worth going earlier in the day, even in late spring. That lets you enjoy the beach while it is still wonderfully calm. We also often suggest pairing it with a relaxed lunch nearby rather than trying to keep the whole day overly structured.

For guests who want one of the best beaches in Puglia for families, this is always close to the top of our list.

7. Punta Prosciutto

Not far from Torre Lapillo, Punta Prosciutto offers a more open, striking stretch of coast with sand dunes and vivid water that can be truly beautiful. It is one of those beaches that immediately feels like a proper sea escape. The landscape opens up, the colours intensify, and the whole day seems to take on a lighter mood.

We especially like recommending Punta Prosciutto to guests who do not mind a slightly longer drive in exchange for scenery that feels a little more dramatic. It is wonderful for swimming, sunbathing, and simply taking in that expansive coastal view.

That said, this is a beach to enjoy with a little foresight. Shade can be limited, and windy days are worth watching. For families with very young children, bringing everything you need for comfort makes a big difference. For older children and adults, it can be a wonderful place to settle in and fully enjoy the sea.

8. Baia dei Turchi

The “bay of the turks” is where Turkish soldiers landed in the fifteenth century during the Otranto battle. Today it is all peace and quiet and makes for a wonderful day by the seaside, surrounded by woodland. Reached through a natural setting of pine trees and sandy paths, it has a more tucked-away feeling than some of the easier-access beaches closer to us. That sense of arrival is part of the experience.

Don’t forget to stop by Otranto for the evening to explore this amazing port town with its many bars, restaurants and a famous castle.

We tend to recommend Baia dei Turchi to couples, families with older children, or guests who enjoy combining beach time with a scenic drive along Puglia's eastern coast. If you are travelling with a buggy or lots of beach equipment, it may not be the easiest option of the list, but if you like places that feel naturally beautiful and slightly removed, it is well worth considering.

A few local tips for a more relaxed beach day

One of the easiest ways to enjoy Puglia's beaches is to keep the day simple. We always tell guests that the most memorable beach days here are rarely the ones packed with too many stops. Choose one stretch of coast, leave with time to spare, and let the day unfold naturally.

A few practical notes can help:

  • Go early when you can. Even in late spring, the most popular beaches are loveliest in the morning.

  • Bring shade and water. Some natural beaches are less serviced, and comfort matters, especially with children.

  • Keep one layer handy. If the breeze picks up, a light shirt or wrap can make the late afternoon much more pleasant.

  • Check the wind. On some days, one coast is noticeably calmer than the other. This is something we are always happy to help guests with.

Q: What are the best beaches in Puglia for families?

A: For families, we often recommend Torre Canne, Torre Lapillo, and the Pilone or Lido Morelli stretch. They offer sandy shores, easier access, and water that is generally more comfortable for children to enjoy.

Q: Is late May a good time to visit the beaches in Puglia?

A: Yes, late May  is one of our favourite times for beach days in Puglia. The weather is pleasantly warm, the scenery is still fresh and green, and the beaches are usually calmer than in peak summer.

Q: Do I need a car to visit Puglia's beaches?

A: In most cases, yes. A car gives you the freedom to explore both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts at your own pace and makes it much easier to reach quieter beaches and plan family-friendly day trips.

Q: Are there free beaches in Puglia as well as beach clubs?

A: Absolutely. Many areas in Puglia offer a mix of free public beach and lidos with sunbeds, umbrellas, and food service. Places like Capitolo are especially helpful if you want both options nearby.

Q: Which side of Puglia is better for calm water?

A: It depends on the day and the wind, but the Ionian coast is often known for calmer, shallower water and long sandy beaches. The Adriatic side can be brighter and more varied, with both sandy stretches and scenic coves.
